AFC Championship: Colts vs Patriots

Tonight sees the Indianapolis Colts travel to Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Patriots for the AFC Championship. The winner will go on to Super Bowl XLIX in Arizona in 2 weeks time to face either Seattle or Green Bay. By the time the Colts and Patriots game kicks off the winner will know who their opponent will be in the big game but the question is who will represent the AFC in that game?

Well in a playoff game with the stakes so high it is tough to predict and that's despite the fact that the last 3 times these teams have met have ended in victory for the Patriots by a margin of 21 points of more including last years playoffs when the Pats walked over their opponents 43-22. The key to New England's last two wins against the Colts have been the running game with LeGarrette Blount torching the Colts for 166 yards and 4 touchdowns in that playoff game last year and back in week 11 of this season when we saw the emergence of Jonas Gray who's 37 carries went for 201 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Since then though Indianapolis' run defense has got much better and besides a crazy 4th down run completion by C.J. Anderson last week when they faced Denver the Colts did a great job of stopping the run which forced the game on to Peyton Manning's shoulders. That was the key factor in last week's win for the Colts as unfortunately for Manning in spite of Manning's undeniable greatness when it comes to the bright lights of the postseason he does falter with last weeks loss being his 9th one and done appearance in the playoffs.

Now if the Colts want to send the Patriots home packing just like they did to the Broncos last week then there will have to be a different game plan as forcing the game on Tom Brady's shoulders will just end in disaster. That was the scenario that Brady faced last week when the Pats rallied back from two 14 point deficits to overcome the Ravens in one of the greatest playoff victories in the franchises history. If New England do go on to win the Super Bowl then that game will be a defining moment in this teams history and in the dynasty created by Belichick and Brady as despite all the adversity they have faced this year and in last week's game in particular when it matters most they know how to come up trumps.

For the Colts to indeed have a chance of causing an upset then they have to limit their turnovers. Andrew Luck threw 2 interceptions last week and in his career versus the Patriots he has thrown 8 interceptions in 3 games which is the most against any opponent he has faced during his 3 year career. Luck has the potential to pull off magic and gets better year by year and also game by game; a player like him thrives in moments like this and he himself could go down as one of the best to play the game when his career comes to and end but going up against Tom Brady who is making his 9th appearance in an AFC Title game with the chance of playing in a 6th Super Bowl is going to be one of the biggest challenges of this young mans career.

Down 21-14 halftime last week after throwing an interception just before the half which resulted in a Ravens touchdown to put them behind Baltimore then went 28-14 ahead with another touchdown after the break. Tom Brady had to come up with something big, something magical against an opponent who have been a thorn in the Patriots' side in recent years gone by and he did just that. Brady orchestrated a touchdown drive which ended with a 2nd and goal touchdown pass to Gronkowski to put the Pats within 7 and just over 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter and that's when the Patriots started to pull out all the stops.

Belichick used his genius to pull out new formations that frustrated his opposite number Jim Haubaugh so much that he ran on to the field which resulted in a 15 yard penalty. That inspired offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to dial up the trick play and play of the game when Brady threw behind the line of scrimmage to Julian Edelman who threw a dime to Danny Amendola down field for the 51 yard touchdown to tie the game. Amendola was the standout performer for me especially after his fumble at the beginning of the first quarter, it appeared that he would struggle once again but he stepped out of the wilderness to play the best game of his NFL career to date when it mattered most.

On 3rd and 6 down 31-28 he got crucial yards after the catch with brilliant play to break a tackle and make the key conversion with just over 7 minutes left in the 4th in that touchdown drive which won the game for New England. That drive was the career defining moment when Brady pulled in to that bag of magic one more time to lead the Patriots down the field and finish the drive with a perfectly thrown pass to Brandon LaFell in between 2 defenders to put New England 35-31 ahead with 5:13 remaining (that touchdown put Brady ahead of Joe Montana for the most touchdowns of all-time in the playoffs with 46) .At the time the Pats didn't know that it would be that score which would win them the game but it was. Brady and Belichick had done it again and the Patriots have a fantastic chance to end their 10/11 year wait for a Super Bowl victory.

Now I have to say that offense gets not all but the vast majoirty of the praise especially when you have a first ballot hall of famer under centre putting up points. After all Tom Brady has the most playoff wins of any QB ever and Bill Belichick is now tied with the most wins amongst any head coach in NFL history which obviously helps but after a shocking first half performance last week the Patriots defense stepped up when it mattered most with the likes of Devin McCourty who intecepted Joe Flacco to give the Pats defense some momentum, Jamie Collins who was a beast and showed why he has the talent to become of the best linebackers in the league, Patrick Chung (3rd and goal he broke up a pass to Owen Daniels to hold the Ravens to a field goal and only go ahead by 3 points: 31-28) and Duron Harmon who's late interception in the final quarter essential killed the game are all unsung heroes. Even Darrelle Revis had a torrid time against Steve Smith in the first half but in the second half he proved why he is in the top 3 best corners in the league with a bounce back performance.

Defense doesn't completely win championships like the cliche goes but you need your D to come up big when it matters most which is what New England's did last Sunday and come today's game they will need to up their play for the entire contest in order to help give this Patriots team a shot at another Lombardi. The same goes for the Colts defense as they will have to maintain the high level of play they pulled off last week against Denver which showed physicality and passion in order to stop this Pats offense. In their last encounter back in week 11 when the Patriots won 42-20 the run game as well as Rob Gronkowski tore the Colts defense apart simply because they were more physical and just outright stronger than their opponents. Vontae Davis is one of the best 3 corners in the league so he will need to be at his best to inspire this Colts defense if they are to pull off victory and that is exactly what he did last week as he inspired his partner Gregg Toler to put in a stellar performance which made the Broncos offense look ordinary.

Doing that against the Patriots will be a slightly more challenging task but after winning in Mile High last week the Colts have the momentum that all teams need when it comes to the postseason. The same goes for New England as they will feel they have the momentum required to go all the way. For me the key to this game again is Rob Gronkowski; as I've said for weeks now if he is healthy the Patriots will win the Super Bowl but of course productivity comes in to play as well. His blocking will help the run game when the Patriots attempt to do so and they will hope it will work better than last week considering Brady thew 50 pass attempts and dragged the team out of a tough spot but here is the key for me: When Gronk has 40 plus receiving yards the Patriots are 11-1 including the postseason and 2-2 when he has been held to less. If Gronk gets going then this one is over especially as this season Indianapolis main weakness has been tight ends so when going up against the best in the league it could be the difference maker.

Of course we know Andrew Luck has 40 touchdowns and is having a career year, he has TY Hilton, Moncrief, Nicks along with fellow wide out Reggie Wayne who can still make plays and Boom Herron who has taken the running game in to his own hands in the past two weeks but in playoff games of this magnitude home field advantage is a big thing and despite the Colts' brilliant performance last week versus Denver I think a win over Belichick and Brady in their own back yard with a Super Bowl place at stake is too big of a task for the Colts to overcome in this stage of Luck's career. Luck is a brilliant quarterback and Indianapolis will have to score at least 30 points to win this one but I don't see that happening; Under Andrew Luck the Colts will have great moments and in his career he will raise the Lombardi trophy on probably more than one occasion but the Patriots are prepared for this situation, Brady and Belichick have striven so much for this moment and are determined to lead the franchise to a 4th Super Bowl title to cement their greatness in NFL history... A win tonight gives them that chance and they'll be sure to capture it.

Prediction: Colts 27-37 Patriots

Championship Sunday!

Tomorrow is Championship Sunday and nobody can argue against the fact that the four best teams in the national football league have made it to what is one of the biggest and most highly anticipated double headers on a NFL Sunday in years! The AFC matchup sees two of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game go head to head once again as Tom Brady and the New England Patriots go on the road to take on the Peyton Manning led Denver Broncos. Then straight after that two arch enemies of the of the NFC West will have a rubber match with a place at Super Bowl XLVIII at stake as the red hot San Francisco 49ers walk in to the cauldron that is CenturyLink Field to face the Seattle Seahawks. Now it is time for me to look at these two games and give you my insight as well as my predictions for these two games.

NFC Championship game: San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks

The NFC Championship game sees the 49ers travel to Seattle for the third matchup of the season between these two bitter rivals. We have the two best defenses in football going up against each other in what is set to be a mouthwatering affair and as well as that both of these teams have two of the best young quarterbacks in the league in the shape of Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson respectively.

Earlier in the season the Niners walked in to CenturyLink Field for the week 2 game and were blown out 29-3. The 49ers offense was manhandled and the defense was blown away in a 4th quarter which saw them give up 17 points. Since then the Niners managed to defeat Seattle 19-17 to tie the series up on the year and when you include the teams two playoff victories over Green Bay and Carolina they have now won 8 straight. Colin Kaepernick is 3-0 on the road in the postseason and for a young QB already has valuable playoff experience after helping the team reach the Super Bowl last season; Joe Montana and Steve Young were 1-7 on the road in the postseason combined!

No team has made it back to the Super Bowl after suffering defeat the previous year to then go on and win it the next since the 1972 17-0 Miami Dolphins and the only other exception was the team who they lost to in that Super Bowl the year before; the 1971 Dallas Cowboys. So it is safe to say Jim Harbaugh's team are up against it statistically tomorrow especially when you consider that the Seattle Seahawks have only lost one game at home since Russell Wilson became the teams starting quarterback and after they defeated the Saints last week his record at home is now 16-1.

The second year quarterback also set a record this year when he recorded 24 years in his first two seasons in the league. Even head coach Pete Carroll holds an impressive 24-8 home record as the teams leader since he took over at the beginning of the 2010 season. When Carroll and Harbaugh face off there are always fireworks as these two head coaches just don't like each other so whether there will be hand shakes at the end of tomorrow nights game is anybody's call. You can guarantee there will be plenty of over dramatics tomorrow night from these two men in the form of jumping, excessive celebrating, shouting and fist pumping but I'm not complaining because passion is what makes sport so amazing and when you have two of the best teams in the league facing off against each other you want it to be a bit personal as it adds that extra bit of spice to the game.

In most games you can pinpoint a certain area that will go a long way to determining the result but in this Niners-Seahawks encounter it is hard to put your finger on the key points. Both defenses are tough, both defenses are hard hitting and both defenses are nasty I mean honestly I would not want to be an offensive player on either team tomorrow. Personally with the Legion of Boom at their disposal I think the Seattle defense is slightly better than that of the 49ers but that's not taking anything away from the likes of Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman of the Niners as those two linebackers are probably the two you'd choose to try and help stop Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch.

As we know the two Smith's Justin and Aldon aren't exactly bad themselves and the Niners secondary has the likes of Carlos Rodgers, Eric Wright and Eric Reid who ain't no slouches. Seattle's defense though as I said is slightly better and not just because of the likes of Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas in the secondary. Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett are great pass rushers and will look to disrupt any rhythm the 49ers offense looks to get going. Despite me giving the Seahawks an edge on defense the thing that makes this matchup interesting is that I believe the 49ers offense is better than that of their NFC West counterparts.

Russell Wilson is very efficient but in recent weeks he has been quiet whereas Colin Kaepernick continues to light it up in the postseason and since the return of Michael Crabtree to this San Francisco offense Kaepernick has looked a lot more dangerous. The passing game of the Niners has got going since Crabtree returned and that has given Kaepernick the ability to effect the game with his legs once again. He outplayed Cam Newton last week and personally I feel he is underrated as a passer and I would even say he is a better passer than Newton. Russell Wilson can make big plays though as he is very talented and not just a game manager so if Seattle need to cut him loose to make things happen I'm sure Pete Carroll will have no hesitation in doing so.

The only downside for Seattle offensively though is that offseason acquisition Percy Harvin has never got going this year due to injury problems and the concussion he suffered last week which rules him out of tomorrow's game pretty much sums up his 2013 campaign. Harvin was signed to be the playmaker that would give the Seahawks a different dimension offensively but that plan hasn't come to fruition. Baldwin, Kearse and Golden Tate are good receivers but in comparison to the 49ers wideouts they are no match. Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis can cause Seattle problems tomorrow and Frank Gore is a very good running back who's name I haven't even mentioned yet!

With that being said though I feel that on the day Pete Carroll will get the edge over Jim Harbaugh because Carroll knows what it takes to beat the 49ers when his team is hosting them. Harbaugh is a great young coach and has taken his team to three straight conference championships but to get his team back to the Super Bowl could be a step too far. The Niners are hot and are on a very good streak but to walk out of Seattle with the NFC title is such a tough challenge. Seattle got the home loss out of the way during the regular season and have managed to refocus themselves for the task ahead that is the playoffs. It won't be a blow out and it will be a tightly contested affair which will come down to one or two critical plays in a matchup which will decide who takes the ultimate bragging rights in the NFC West and more importantly a trip to MetLife Stadium in 2 weeks time!

Prediction: 49ers 24-27 Seahawks


AFC Championship: New England Patriots vs Denver Broncos

The hype around this matchup is incredible as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning face off in the 15th installment of a quarterback rivalry that has lasted for over a decade. With both of these QB's in the later years of their 30's you would probably say that this could be the last time that these two face off with the stakes being as high as they are for tomorrow.

But as we know you should never count out Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Manning has finally got to where he wants to be and that is within reach of a third Super Bowl appearance; he is having a monster season having broken Tom Brady's regular season record for passing touchdowns by throwing 55 and breaking Drew Brees' passing yards record by racking up 5,477. These stats will count for nothing though if the season doesn't end with Peyton hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in the air.

Tom Brady is quite simply Peyton Manning's kryptonite and there is no doubt about it because history doesn't lie. Even in recent memory you only have to look back at the week 12 encounter at Gillette Stadium where Tom Brady and co wiped out a Broncos lead of 24-0 to win the game 34-31 in overtime. That victory gave Brady his 10th victory over Manning in their 14 games against each other including the postseason. Let us look at the stats between the two in the encounters:

Now I will be the first to point out that tomorrow's game between Denver and New England is not just about these two men as it is between two teams who are both hungry to play in the biggest sporting spectacle on earth but whoever wins out of Brady or Manning will have their picture posted on websites across the world for the next fortnight. Brady's 10-4 career head-to-head over Manning says it all and his touchdown to interception ratio shows his efficiency. Brady leads in all categories but one and has a passer rating that is higher by 11! The only category that he doesn't lead in is passing yardage and you could argue that it is because Manning is behind in most games so his teams have chased the games meaning he passes more but enough of that.

No offence to Peyton Manning fans but they love to use statistics to fight their corner. I don't want to take anything away from Manning because he is one of the greatest to play at the position but unfortunately for him if the Broncos lose tomorrow that leaves Manning on his own with a record that nobody wants and that is a quarterback with the most losses in the postseason. 12 losses when it matters lost is unprecedented and that does not look good on anyone looking to leave a legacy.

Brady's legacy will be uncanny if he and the Patriots win the Super Bowl this year. The same applies for head coach Bill Belichick; he claimed his 19th victory as a coach in the playoffs when New England eased past the Colts last week which now leaves him tied in second place with Don Shula. If the Patriots win tomorrow Belichick will tie Tom Landry for the most playoff wins with 20 and if dare I say it the Patriots win the Super Bowl that would be the perfect way for Belichick to break the record and it will leave him on 21.

Back to Brady and his legacy; he is so close to being the greatest quarterback of all-time and if he guides an injury depleted Patriots side that has so many similarities to 2001 Super Bowl winning side it will be the perfect way to cement his name as the greatest to play the game. Brady is tied for Super Bowl appearances with John Elway having played in 5. He and Elway have both won 3 of those which leaves Brady just one shy of Montana and Bradshaw's record of 4 Super Bowl wins. Brady holds the record for playoff wins by a quarterback with 18 so a win tomorrow against Denver and a Super Bowl victory would see Brady end the 2013 season with 20 playoffs wins, 4 Super Bowl victories and 6 appearances in the big game which in my opinion leaves no debate as to who is the greatest quarterback to grace the NFL.

As I have pointed out though this is a team game and it will take a big performance from the New England Patriots to topple the Denver Broncos tomorrow. The Patriots are playing up to the title of underdog and why not because it puts pressure on the opponents. Personally I feel that they are underdogs as despite the fact that Brady can pick holes in a vulnerable Broncos secondary he goes up against a Broncos run defense that has improved in weeks gone by and they know that they have to stop the likes of Blount, Ridley and Vereen in order to win this game. On the flip side Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense is firing on all cylinders and the likes of Welker and Decker along with Julius and Demaryius Thomas will pose problems for a New England defense haunted by injuries.

For Denver to win this game is to score early because taking the pressure off Peyton Manning is a must especially in a conference championship which sees Manning take to the field in a game of his magnitude for the first time since the 2009 season (Brady on the other hand is making is 8th conference championship appearance). Now this may sound silly as it always applies but turnovers are the decisive and key factor for me. My explanation is that if the Patriots turn the ball over I feel they can still win this game but if the Broncos turn it over it'll cost them and they will lose. The more pressure on the Denver Broncos tomorrow and the more likely it'll be that they fall.

New England's defense is led by the defensive mastermind that is Bill Belichick and despite injuries to Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork the younger guy on the team like Chandler Jones and Hightower have been big for this team. Last week saw the emergence of Jamie Collins and he will be looking to build on his success from that win over the Colts. Rob Ninkovich and Dane Fletcher also deserve a mention too and then there's the secondary which possesses the likes of Aqib Talib, Devin McCourty, Alfonzo Dennard and Logan Ryan who can all hold their own against the firepower of the Broncos offense.

If the Pats defense can continue to force turnovers it will give them a very good chance of walking out of Mile High as winners tomorrow. Earlier on in the season I predicted that the two would meet in the AFC title game at Mile High and here it is. At the time I didn't anticipate that the Pats offense would become the ground and pound juggernaut that it has done in recent weeks led by LeGarrette Blount who continued wrecking havoc last week when he ran in for 4 touchdowns and 166 rushing yards which tied a franchise record. If the ground game gets going again with the one-two punch of Blount and Ridley it will open up Shane Vereen in the backfield for Tom Brady and also give him plenty of play-action opportunities which we saw tear Denver apart earlier in the season. Julian Edelman will obviously be crucial to any success the Patriots have tomorrow night and it is also the perfect time for Danny Amendola to step out of the shadow of Wes Welker by outplaying his opposite number. I could sit here night and day writing comparisons but the fact of the matter is that this New England Patriots vs Denver Broncos game will be one for the ages and a playoff game that will be remembered for years to come as well as possibly playing a critical role in deciding an argument that has gone on for years. Brady vs Manning part 15: Let the games begin!

Prediction: Patriots 31-30 Broncos

In the face of adversity the Patriots will rise

The New England Patriots have endured a lot of misfortune in recent times with Wednesday's arrest of Aaron Hernandez being the tip of the iceberg when the former Patriots tight end was charged with murder resulting in him being cut from New England's roster. The fact that the franchise lost its best receiver in the shape of Wes Welker this off-season to AFC rivals the Denver Broncos, albeit the Patriots' decision, in hindsight you would say that it may be a slight regret considering that the team have just lost another one of its offensives best weapons due to these unfortunate circumstances. The franchise made the right decision in immediately cutting ties with Aaron Hernandez as you can't condone what he has done and now the Patriots will move forward to prepare for the 2013 NFL season.

New England have faced adversity before and are looking to bounce back from the teams unfortunate defeat in the AFC title game on January 20th this year which saw the Patriots uncharacteristically crumble in the second quarter after leading at halftime; Tom Brady & co were previously 67-0 in games when leading at halftime before that defeat and had also never lost an AFC championship game at home until the 28-13 loss. Considering the sour defeat, the loss of key players and the fact that the New England Patriots haven't won a Super Bowl since 2004 despite appearing in two since you could say that now more than ever that the franchise is staring adversity straight in the face. The argument of not winning a Super Bowl since the Spygate saga, albeit not a valid point, has still not been put to bed giving rival fans something to annoy Patriots supporters with and the wounds have never truly healed after missing out on a shot of redemption when they lost against the Giants at Super Bowl XLVI after the New Yorkers previously defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII when the team had a shot at perfection after going in to the game 18-0.

2013 looks to be a big challenge for Bill Belichick and his team as his defense continues to develop through young talent whilst the offense sees Tom Brady line up without three of his top four offensive weapons from the 2012 campaign as Rob Gronkowski is recovering from multiple surgeries and is in a race against time to be fit for the start of the season. Despite the fact that Brady has no top receivers he always succeeds but it is safe to say that at almost 36 years old and with the window for a coveted 4th Super Bowl championship closing recent events have given Brady possibly his biggest challenge to date. Now is the time to stand up and be counted and who else could the Patriots ask for as their leader other than Tom Brady as he is a man who strives to win and that winning mentality runs strong throughout the entire New England organisation. Tom Brady knows what it is like to be in a tough spot as when he first came in to the league he was written off with many people expecting little of the former 6th round pick out of Michigan but nevertheless he went on to win his first Super Bowl as a second year QB when he came in to replace the injured Drew Bledsoe as the teams starter.

Following that fairytale Brady then went on to guide the Patriots to back to back Super Bowl wins in 2003 and 2004 as the team established itself as a dynasty. Since Brady became the Patriots' starting quarterback the team has appeared in 5 Super Bowls and won 3; he has also won two Super Bowl MVP awards. Overall in his career Brady has a postseason record of 17-7 meaning that his playoff win total is the highest in NFL history and the quarterback has also helped set the record the longest consecutive win streak in NFL history with 21 straight wins over two seasons (2003-2004). He holds the NFL record for the most touchdown passes in a single regular season (50) and has been selected to eight pro bowls. Among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 career passing attempts Tom Brady has the third highest career passing rating of all time among QB's (96.6) and in 2012 he became the first quarterback in the leagues history to lead his team to 10 division titles. Along with Joe Montana he and Brady are the only two players in NFL history to win the Super Bowl MVP award and NFL MVP award multiple times.

Despite all that has gone on the New England Patriots know how to deal with anything affecting the franchise on and off the field. The Aaron Hernandez situation is an unfortunate circumstance and sadly not all people know how to deal with superstardom; to quote Abraham Lincoln "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power" and in this case money as well as fame was Hernandez's power but sadly it all got to his head and it appears he's made a decision that will affect him for the rest of his life. On the field Hernandez's versatility was invaluable but in the 2012 season he did miss over two months of and the Patriots offense continued to tick with it finishing the regular season overall with the top scoring offense in the league. The likes of Jake Ballard, Mike Hoomanawanui and Daniel Fells will compete to earn a starting spot on the roster along with Gronkowski once he is fit but the Patriots running game will be key to any success in the foreseeable future with the likes of Ridley and Vereen now gaining extra importance in this offense ahead of the 2013 season.
  
Thankfully for the Patriots in terms of football they have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick with the two combining to form one of the most successful quarterback-coach tandems in NFL history with the two winning 125 regular season games along with 17 postseason games together as well as appearing in 5 Super Bowls which are all NFL records. Brady has never had a stellar supporting cast with Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Troy Brown being the only three standout receivers Brady has had at his disposal during his time as the team's QB. Deoin Branch was a product of the system and worked well with Brady and the likes of David Patten, David Givens and Charles Johnson while despite part of the franchises dynasty hardly are the types of offensive weapons that would set a team alight. Jabar Gaffney and Donte Stallworth are the other two receivers who gave Brady good production but again it is Brady himself who makes his receivers produce the good. You could argue with age that he has become a better quarterback so he will deal with whatever he is given; he and Danny Amendola have built up a good rapport during this off-season and he has Julian Edelman returning from injury who if you remember was starting ahead of Wes Welker at the start of the 2012 season. Rookies Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce both have the potential to be a success in New England and will most likely get a chance to prove themselves right from the offset to do the team's lack of depth at the position whilst the likes of Michael Jenkins, Lavelle Hawkins and Donald Jones are hardly household names but will hope to earn a spot on the team's roster ahead of the 2013 season.

The Patriots know how to overcome adversity and win as it in the franchises DNA so in 2013 do not be surprised if New England defies its doubters and comes out of this season on top. The team has done it before from topping the Giants in the teams debut at Schaefer Stadium 20-14 in August 1971 to defeating New Orleans 27-6 at Foxboro in 1976 to clinch their first playoff appearance since the 1963 AFL Championship game. In December 1978 the Patriots clinched their first outright divisional championship in the club's history with a last minute 26-24 victory over Buffalo at home and in the 1985 season the team defied the odds to reach Super Bowl XX where they eventually lost to the 15-1 Chicago Bears. Those 1985 Patriots were the first team in NFL history ever to advance to the Super Bowl by winning 3 playoff games on the road as they defeated the Jets 26-14, the Los Angeles Raiders, 27-20, and the Miami Dolphins 31-14, in the AFC Championship game which gave New England their first AFC Championship win in team history and in doing so ended the teams 18 game losing streak at the Orange Bowl also giving them their first win in that stadium since 1969. Following that the team plummeted somewhat with the franchise suffering difficulties until the 90s when Robert Kraft bought the franchise and the team achieved success with division titles in 1996 and 1997 with the pinnacle of that decade being an appearance in Super Bowl XXII where they lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-21.

The Patriots are used to staring adversity in the face with many believing they would fall to the ST. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans but an Adam Vinatieri 48-yard field goal as time expired helped the Patriots claim the first Super Bowl championship of their 42-year history with a 20-17 win. The Lombardi trophy had finally made its way to New England and that postseason saw the Patriots overcome tough games against the Raiders in a snowstorm which ended 16-13 and an AFC Championship win over the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-17. We know about the teams most recent successes since its first Super Bowl win and while for now the Patriots appear to be up against it with a big challenge ahead the quest for a 4th championship is still on the cards. While Brady and Belichick are on this team they will always be a contender and in 2013 you can expect them to finish the regular season AFC East champions again. The Jets and Bills are in a transition period and the Dolphins will have to defy history if they are to succeed following a major splash during this year's free agency. In 2013 you can expect New England to lose a minimum of 5 games meaning that they will still compete with the Broncos and the Texans for a first round bye ahead of the playoffs. The Patriots are facing adversity now more than ever but they are prepared for it after dealing with these types of challenges over the years. Of course having a big task ahead is not ideal but having winners likes Tom Brady and Bill Belichick leading your team ensures you will compete as they will settle for nothing less. What is defeat? Nothing but education; nothing but the first steps to something better and that is what New England can take from the losses to the Giants and Ravens. They have had many wins but they want that fourth championship and what better way to achieve redemption than to win it at MetLife stadium next February at Super Bowl XLVIII to avenge past demons... Considering the winning mentality of this franchise despite the increasing odds people are putting against them who would actually bet against this team because knowing the New England Patriots anything is possible.

Conference Championship Previews

Last week I went 1-3 on predictions and after spending most of the week cleaning my wounds I've dusted myself down and prepared my predictions for the AFC and NFC title games; even Elliot Harrison from NFL.com went 1-3 in his predictions... Just throwing that out there.

We are 2 weeks away from Super Bowl 47 and two teams will make the trip to New Orleans ready to fight it out for the Lombardi Trophy on the biggest stage of them all so let's bite our teeth in to the two mouth-watering match-ups

San Francisco 49ers vs Atlanta Falcons

Can Kaepernick help the Niners knock off Atlanta

Last week I predicted both of these teams to lose and in fitting fashion both have made it to the NFC title game but when the playoffs began I did say that if the 49ers made it past the divisional round they would win the NFC Championship then advance to Super Bowl 47 and lose.

Forgetting the Super Bowl for now though let us just stick to this game and yes the Niners will win. All you have to do is watch the performance of quarterback Colin Kaepernick last weekend to know that this guy is the real deal. He completed 17/31 passes for 263 yards in the air, 2 touchdowns and a pick then on the ground he tore it up just as much if not more by rushing for 181 yards on 16 attempts for 2 scores in the 49ers' 45-31 victory over Green Bay. The Kapernick interception was thrown within the early stages of the first quarter but after that he came to town and was instrumental in the Niners pulling off the victory. The San Francisco offense if just as dangerous as its defense now who welcomed back Justin Smith in the divisional round so Atlanta better watch out.

Now this is not to say that the Falcons don't have a chance of winning because in the national football league anything can happen but the one stat that stands out for me is that the 49ers put up 579 yards in total on offense last week but only gave up 352 yards on defense against an Aaron Rodgers lead Packers in comparison to the Falcons who gave up 491 yards in total on defense but did manage to put up 417 yards on offense against a tough Seattle defense. For me this shows that the 49ers will find a way to win because despite Atlanta's offensive weapons Matt Ryan does not possess the experience or the offense to cause the Niners defense the problems that Tom Brady did against them in week 15.

The most important factor though is how far Colin Kaepernick has come since becoming the 49ers quarterback. I don't think there is anyone in the NFL who can do what this guy can do because the way he runs the ball which is speed for a QB is unreal and makes his a threat to any opposing defense but more than anything he has a tremendous ability to throw the football which many have criticised and even doubted. Jim Harbaugh made the right call putting in this kid for Alex Smith as it has taken his offense and this football team to the next level. It will be hard going on the road and winning in the playoffs especially at the Georgia Dome but unless the Falcons can force some turnovers and hope that quarterback Matt Ryan stays as cool as ice then it will be San Francisco representing the NFC at Super Bowl 47.

Baltimore Ravens vs New England Patriots

Brady vs Lewis the final episode

Ray Lewis' career in the NFL continues for another week as he inspired the Ravens to go on the road and knock off Peyton Manning and the first seeded Denver Broncos. Now Baltimore has a chance to redeem themselves for their defeat in the AFC Championship game last season against the New England Patriots with the rematch set up for Sunday night at Gillette Stadium bringing two of the greatest players in their respective positions head to head for once last time when Ray Lewis goes head to head against Tom Brady.

The two things that gives the Ravens a chance in this game is that their defense have returned to their nasty self and that Joe Flacco is now elite... Yes I said elite! The 70 yard touchdown pass he made against Denver in the fourth quarter to tie the game up and take it to overtime was absolute magic and proved he has the ability to potentially mix it with the best. The rejuvenated Flacco has emerged ever since Jim Caldwell has hired as the team's offensive coordinator for week 15 and since then Flacco has thrown 9 touchdowns and just one interception.

Now the Ravens will need to match the Patriots offense if they are to stay in the game as it could well become a shootout but their one concern must be running back Ray Rice as he looks like he is scared about fumbling the football. You can see it in the way Rice is holding the ball and he has already had a few errors during the post-season up until this point. This will be a real cause for concern for Baltimore considering the Patriots lead the league in turnovers with a differential of +25 which includes 20 interceptions and 21 forced fumbles.

Now that New England's defense has the ability to make big plays all over the field thanks to a reborn secondary which can cover the pass and a defense running game led by Vince Wilfork it is going to be hard to get past the Patriots. Combine that with an offense that is getting it done on the ground with Stevan Ridley and their backs love to come out and catch the ball which is what Shane Vereen did perfectly in the team's 41-28 victory over the Texans in the absence of Danny Woodhead who went down to injury in the first quarter. Vereen racked in 83 yards receiving for two touchdowns including a 33 yard touchdown reception from a beautifully thrown pass by Tom Brady as well as racking up 41 yards and a score on the ground.

The Patriots offense is on fire even without superstar tight-end Rob Gronkowski as they have the likes of Hernandez, Lloyd and Welker to go to. The team put up 457 yards in total against Houston in the divisional round and they also boats the number one offense in the league following outstanding performances during the regular season. All of the signs are there for New England to make it back to the Super Bowl and that is exactly what I think will happen. Tom Brady was masterful again last weekend completing 25/40 passing attempts for 344 yards and throwing three touchdown passes. It was a perfect performance by Brady and with the win took him to 17 playoffs wins overtaking the legendary Joe Montana.

The following stats also suggest that New England wins on Sunday:

1. Now it may not be playoff related but in his career as a starter Tom Brady is 136-39

2. Brady is 17-6 in his career as a starter in the playoffs.

3. He is also a very impressive 11-2 at home in the playoffs in his career as starter

4. Finally and probably the most applicable to this game is that Tom Brady is 3-0 at home as a starter in AFC Championship games.

So all in all despite it being pretty obvious that the Ravens do have a chance I fancy New England to win on Sunday and advance to the Super Bowl in New Orleans where if they win it will mark 10 years exactly to the day that they won their first Super Bowl which was also in New Orleans; 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams February 3rd 2002.
