New England Patriots final 53-man roster projection

The New England Patriots wrapped up their preseason with a solid 28-20 victory over the New York Giants last night. Now the team has to cut its roster to the final 53-man squad by 6pm on Saturday. With the likes of Quentin Sims and George Winn putting in very good performances they have given coach Belichick food for thought. Tim Tebow connected with Sims on two great touchdown plays and despite some bad moments this guy showed nothing keeps him down. Ryan Mallett and Josh Boyce both showed off their skills especially on their 40 yard touchdown play. Michael Buchanan almost all but confirmed his roster spot last night whilst Jake Bequette played well in the preseason finale to show he's not giving up hope of making the team.

Roster Selection:

OFFENSE:

Quarterbacks (3): Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Tim Tebow

I'm sticking with the three quarterbacks. The Patriots have only kept 2 QB's on their roster in 3 of the past 4 seasons but Bill Belichick would not have signed Tim Tebow for no reason even if that reason is to develop him as a quarterback under the guidance of himself and Josh McDaniels plus you know we will see Tebow score against the Jets on September 12th and that in itself is a good enough reason to select him. Ryan Mallett will hang around for years to come in New England; you can see he's growing thanks to the franchise and that to get the chance to learn from Tom Brady has been very beneficial to this young man. To have 3 talented quarterbacks in a rarity so for the 2013 season its worth keeping these three around.

Running Backs (4): Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen Leon Washington, LeGarrette Blount

I'm sticking with my four running backs from the last roster projection and here are the reasons why: Stevan Ridley established himself as a top running back and despite some fumbling troubles he is number one on this team. Shane Vereen's speed and ability to play at wide receiver make him a sure pick for coach Belichick due to his versatility plus Vereen seems to have built up a good rapport with Tom Brady. Leon Washington can offer the team something new on special teams and LeGarrette Blount beats out Brandon Bolden as this teams power running back thanks to a more productive preseason; Blount lead the way on the ground with two touchdowns. Bolden has pass catching ability but that's not enough for him to make the cut especially when George Winn did more in one game last night than Bolden has all preseason but sadly for Winn it may be a little to late despite his 54 yards from 14 carries and a score but don't rule this young man out just yet as he could be a surprise choice although regardless of what happens he will make the practice squad.

Wide Receivers (6): Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, Julian Edelman, Kenbrell Thompkins, Matthew Slater,

Last time I had Jenkins and Jones in my roster projection with seven wideouts for New England but now the consensus seems to be on these 6 guys. Jones was cut a day after my last projection and Jenkings had lacklusture preseason. Their replacement Kenbrell Thompkins had a standout game against Lions where we hauled in 8 catches for 116 yards where he helped showcase his abilities. The undrafted rookie out of Cincinnati  has shown he could lock down the 'X' role in an explosive offense. Along with Josh Boyce and Aaron Dobson these three young talented rookies could all have great years especially as they have Tom Brady throwing to them. Danny Amendola has shown throughout preseason that him and Tom Brady are building a brilliant rapport whilst Julian Edelman will look to build on an impressive 2012 before his injury unfortunately brought his season to an end. Finally Slater earns a spot thanks to his solidness on special teams. Quentin Sims but in a great display against the Giants last night to put himself on Bill Belichick's radar and although it may be too late to make the roster cut you can expect to see him on the practice squad.

Tight Ends (4): Rob Gronkowski, Jake Ballard, Michael Hoomanawanui, Zach Sudfield

Superstar tight-end Rob Gronkowski is a surefire bet. Although he is in a race against time to be fit for week one it would be silly for the Patriots to put him on the PUP list as he'd then be unavailable for 6 weeks. Bill Belichick knows how manage his players and has two very capable tight-ends in the shape of Jake Ballard and Michael Hoomanawanui; both will be hoping to thrive in an explosive offense and both can block as well as help with the run game. With the pair both just 25 years old now is the time to make a name for themselves especially if the wake of a certain former Patriots tight-end's departure who shall not be named. Finally the fourth tight end roster selection will be undrafted rookie from Nevada Zach Sudfield. Sudfield has the size and catching ability to be a very effective offensive weapon, ring any bells, and during preseason he was impressive as he racked up 101 receiving yards from 8 receptions and for one touchdown which came against Tampa Bay in week 2 of preseason.

Offensive Line (8): Nate Solder, Logan Mankins, Sebastian Vollmer, Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell, Marcus Cannon, Will Svitek, Chris McDonald

Solder, Mankins and Vollmer pick themselves. They are essential to the Patriots offensive line and the same can be said for the likes of Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell as they offer the stability and consistency required. Markus Zusevics was my pick last time to make the roster but unfortunately an injury has come at a bad time meaning that Will Svitek all but guarantees his roster spot. Svitek has improved over the course of preseason anyway. Marcus Cannon will be around for another year but the 8th spot will seemingly go to Chris McDonald with the rookie out of Michigan State impressing during the offseason and in a sense beating out the likes of Kevin Haslem and Nick McDonald who both departed.


DEFENSE:

Defensive Ends (6): Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Michael Buchanan, Justin Francis, Jake Bequette, Marcus Benard


Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich were probably the only surefire bets before preseason even began. I'm sticking with Michael Buchanan from my last roster projection especially after a very good performance last night against the Giants. Justin Francis is solid enough to make the cut. Marcus Benard is another player enjoying the ride and his good preseason form gets him a place in the squad whilst Jake Bequette's performance against the Giants last night has done enough in my mind to prove he is capable of being productive for New England.

Defensive Tackles (4): Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly, Marcus Forston, Jermaine Cunningham

The Patriots are limited for options at defensive tackle but thankfully the group is led but the outstanding Vince Wilfork. Tommy Kelly helps provide a great 1-2 punch with Big Vince whilst Marcus Forston is good enough to keep around. I have shifted Jermaine Cunningham to defensive tackle after already selecting six defensive end's; Cunningham sneaks on to the roster now that Armond Armstead is out for at least 6 weeks and with Cory Grissom being placed on season-ending IR it makes sense to select Cunningham for the 53-man roster.

Linebackers (5): Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Dont'a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Dane Fletcher

I'm sticking with the same 5 linebackers as they all have unique talents and will all be beneficial to the Patriots. Jerod Mayo is a defensive leader and crucial to any success New England will have on defense. Dont'a Hightower will look to improve on a good rookie season in 2012. Brandon Spikes seems to improve year by year and will look to do the same in 2013. As for Dane Fletcher and Jamie Collins well you can expect the two to get plenty reps on special teams. Collins will be looking to show off his potential whenever he has the chance as the second round pick out of Southern Miss is a player that the Patriots have high hopes for.

Cornerbacks (5): Aqib Talib, Kyle Arrington, Marquice Cole, Logan Ryan, Alfonzo Dennard


Marquice Cole in for Ras-I Dowling is my one change at the cornerback position. Cole is all but in unless the Patriots bring another body in. Logan Ryan's development will continue while the likes of Dennard and Arrington are given another year to try and prove themselves. The Patriots need results in the secondary so they will be hoping someone can step up and help take the pressure off of Aqib Talib who will be looking to lead the group with some stellar performances. Talib came up big for New England during the second half of last season and now is his chance to prove himself as one of the best shutdown corners in the league.

Safety (5): Devin McCourty, Adrian Wilson, Tavon Wilson, Duron Harmon, Steve Gregory

Last time round I had the young Nate Ebner in but sadly I think he will miss out come cut day tomorrow. Although he can offer help on special teams the Patriots already have enough of that so they will rely on the likes of Steve Gregory and Devin McCourty to offer them stability as well as reliability at the position as the groups production increases. The likes of Tavon Wilson and Duron Harmon may be young but their talent will offer the Patriots something different. Adrian Wilson has rumours around him regarding being cut after a lackluster preseason but I think the veteran will get one last chance. The Patriots were hoping he would offer them the defensive leadership they have lacked and craved since the early 2000 dynasty but right now it appears Wilson may have lost a step but hopefully come the regular season Adrian Wilson will start to show his class.


Special Teams (3): Steve Gostkowski, Zoltan Mesko, Danny Aiken

Gostkowski will be looking to bounce back after a rocky 2012. Zoltan Mesko was given a good run by rookie punter Ryan Allen but as Mesko is one of the best punters in the league he will retain his job. Danny Aiken keeps his job as long snapper.

 

Tim Tebow: How will he fit in as a Patriot

Stop what you're doing right now, drop your pens and papers (well keyboards in most people's cases) immediately because Tim Tebow has been signed and is now a member of the New England Patriots. The media circus will now head to Foxborough as Tebowmania hits New England... Wait a minute no it won't because the Patriots know how to squash media frenzies so in fact you can now say that Tebowmania is over but don't worry Tim this is a good thing for you as you can finally do what you want and concentrate on playing football.

Tim Tebow's signing has come as a surprise to some but many people did say Tebow would suit the Patriots including myself when last month I said his best shot of remaining in the NFL was with the Patriots. To reiterate what I mentioned in May; Bill Belichick knows how to make the most out of versatile athletes and use them for the benefit of himself and the team. If we elaborate on the matter everyone who knows about the Patriots will realise that Tebow will now buy in to the 'Patriot Way' if he is to have a shot of making the roster come the end of training camp, he will give simple answers in press conferences and nobody will know of his actual involvement on the field until game day because the Patriots know how to manage these type of situations and players.

This is a win-win situation for the Patriots as like Albert Haynesworth, Chad Ochocinco and even Anthony Gonzales these type of players came in to New England to try and prove themselves; there was no risk for the Patriots in any of these deals but unfortunately none of them actually worked out as even Ochocinco made the Super Bowl with the team but his struggles to learn the playbook meant that he barely saw any snaps throughout the season. Now although these previous scenarios may not have reaped rewards for the Patriots we do know that in the past Bill Belichick has got the best out of veteran players or players who nobody would take a chance on such as Wes Welker, Danny Woodhead and reviving the career of Willie McGinest to mention a few. Belichick is a mastermind and 9 times out of 10 he gets it right so if he manages to turn Tim Tebow in to a productive football player you can safely say it would be one of his finest achievements.

Tebow walks in to a situation where he can learn from the son of God Tom Brady, you all remember that SNL segment right, and to learn from arguably the greatest quarterback of all time is an honour as well as an opportunity that comes around just once in a lifetime. The Patriots don't need exposure and Tim Tebow himself will have been told he has not been brought in to promote himself as some sort of celebrity because the Patriots are a team who only do business for football purposes and to win a championship. Bill Belichick and his staff sign players they feel can benefit their team so that they can win as year in year out they strive to get better. Now we know that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is a believer in Tim Tebow as a player and as a quarterback which was proven when he gave away draft picks to the Ravens in order to move up and acquire Tebow in the 2010 NFL Draft but his role for the Patriots is something that everyone will keep second guessing until the first time we see him on the field in a New England jersey. 

This signing proves that Belichick doesn't hate Tim Tebow and we all know that the head coach loves versatility; in March 2010 four weeks before the NFL draft he said of Tebow "My sense of Tim Tebow is that if you asked him to play nose, he'd play nose. I think he's the kind of kid, where whatever you ask him to do he'll do. I don't know what a team will do with him, but I think he's a real interesting player. He's had a great career, obviously it speaks for itself." Since establishing himself as one of the best college football players of all time Tebow's stock skyrocketed until his dreadful season in New York last year which on a side note may be a another reason why Belichick signed Tebow as we all know how much he loves to make a success out of players who his rivals have deemed not good enough; Welker in Miami and Woodhead in New York. We know that Belichick loves versatility as some of his greatest players have played various positions on the roster with Richard Seymour switching from defensive end to play fullback, linebacker Mike Vrabel playing Tight End and also catching a memorable touchdown in Super Bowl XXXVIII and with playmaker Troy Brown playing pretty much anyway from wide receiver, cornerback and on special teams.

Tebow is a great athlete and with his versatility people are predicting he will play a number of positions this season with the Patriots but he has been signed as a quarterback and he will learn to grow as a quarterback. If Tebow and the Patriots don't work out then we know he isn't cut out for the NFL because if there's one team and one coach who can get the best out of a player it is Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Tim Tebow comes on to the roster trying to earn a spot on the Patriots team ahead of the season and with minicamp underway today Tebow got straight in to the mix of things as he threw the football with Tom Brady and reunited with Josh McDaniels. His first meeting with the media as a Patriot proved that there will be no media circus allowed around him as he briefly thanked the Patriots for giving him an opportunity. "It's such an honor to be a Patriot and play for coach Belichick and McDaniels, and learn under Tom, and be a part of this great franchise and very successful franchise. I found out firsthand. Lost to them several times. It's going to be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to working hard every single day and getting a lot better, and learning under some great people." 

Tebow knows this is his last shot but what a last shot it is. He knows he will have to bide his time but if he shows off his skills during training then the mastermind that is Bill Belichick will find a way to incorporate him in to the team's offense to benefit the team. Everybody knows that Tebow won't be taking any of Brady's snaps as a quarterback but I personally see Tebow being used at the goal line, in short yardage situations, two point conversions and in the red zone as we all know how hard it is to actually get the football in the end zone once you're on your opponents goal line but Tebow has a knack for doing this; Tim Tebow has nine red zone TD passes in his 25 games and during his career inside the 10 Tim Tebow has rushed 11 times for 9 touchdowns so he has the efficiency to suggest he could help the Patriots in the red zone.

The Patriots love to employ an element of surprise and deceive opponents and by adding someone like Tebow they have the someone with many different attributes to help the team in a number of positions; he may well line up as a blocker at full back or for Ridley in the running game and could be at tight end until Gronkowski gets healthy but ultimately Tebow has come to learn from Tom Brady because unfortunately for the Patriots Tom Brady won't be around forever. Brady is an amazing quarterback but with someone like Tebow at coach Belichick and Josh McDaniels' disposal they can give this offense a different dimension at times and manage Tom Brady as he is getting older. There's no need for your franchise quarterback to be risked getting hurt on QB sneaks and on short yardage plays so Tebow can come in for these type of plays and make a difference.

Tebow has thrown 17 touchdowns to 9 interceptions in his career as an NFL QB, he has 2,422 passing yards, 989 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He is a born winner and a teammate who will bring something to the locker room as you can never have too many leaders. Bill Belichick spoke of whether Tebow could change his throwing motion and survive in the NFL in March 2010 and said  “Tiger Woods has rebuilt his golf swing twice. Every quarterback I've ever had or coached has worked on his mechanics and improved them. Phil Simms, certainly (Jeff) Hostetler, Brady, I can't think of too many that haven't. It's part of every player's development. I mean, show me a player who comes into this league at 21 and is a finished product at any position. Show me one guy.
"They all need work. They all have things they need to work on. Some guys are more coachable than others. Some guys have different things they need to correct, whatever the technique or physical development happens to be. I don't think that's unusual.''

With the above quote and the talent we know Tebow has I think it is save to safe that he will grow under the guidance of Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels and hopefully he takes this opportunity with both hands. Whatever his position if makes the Patriots roster you can expect Tebow to make an impact at some point of the season and you bank on him throwing a goal-line touchdown pass against the Jets just to rub salt in their wounds. I think there is a chance he will grow as a backup QB to Tom Brady as rumours still linger about Ryan Mallet's future with the Browns still interested. Tim Tebow once said in an interview that "My greatest joy in Denver is going to be to repay Coach McDaniels for believing in me." and now he needs to repay McDaniels, Bill Belichick and the Patriots for giving him this chance. There is no money guaranteed in this deal so the Patriots have nothing to lose but this scenario just seems to be perfect for both Tim Tebow and the Patriots. With his skill set I see Tebow being a success in New England and if all goes to plan those to say that a new improved Tim Tebow might be the heir to Tom Brady's throne when the future hall of fame quarterback reaches the end of his contract in 5 years' time. The beauty of sport is only time will tell what actually happens and eventually we will find out if Tebow Time is a success in New England.

What's next for Tim Tebow?

Tebowmania rolled in to New York last off-season and now is on its way out when Tim Tebow was released by the New York Jets shortly after the 2013 NFL Draft finished. While it may be a relief for Tebow that his torrid time in the big apple is over it is safe to say that the effects of last season are putting teams off of signing him to their roster which has now left doubts over him having a future in the NFL.

Tebow has had many critics over his ability to throw the football, his presence in the locker room and his potential to establish himself as a quarterback in the national football league. Now as we know in the NFL it is all about winning games and that applies to every single player on a roster to the coaching staff and to anyone throughout an organisation. Whoever doesn't do his job is quite usually given their marching orders but Tim Tebow has always given 100%.

Being left handed QB in the NFL seems to automatically bring you scepticism over your ability to throw the ball as people have claimed there seems to be a weird looking motion when a 'lefty' throws the ball. A strange case that probably doesn't quite add up but considering right handers are a lot more likely considering the right to left hand ratio on the planet. Back to football and after conducting some research there have only ever been 43 left handed QB's in the league since 1942 with some not even taking a snap or in Armanti Edwards' case where he switched to wide receiver after just two passing attempts (0 completions) and still remains a part of the Carolina Panthers after being drafted in 2010. Only two left handed quarterbacks have ever won a Super Bowl; Ken Stabler of the Oakland Raiders at Super Bowl XI and Steve Young of the San Francisco 49ers who guided his team to three Super Bowls wins making him a part of the NFL Hall of Fame for his achievements.

So we know how hard it is to be a successful quarterback in the NFL especially if you are left handed. Now in Tim Tebow's case we know many of the odds were stacked against him and his criticism over the past 18 months has proven that. Tebow played for the Florida Gators in college where he won the Heisman trophy in 2007 and was a nominated finalist in 2008 & 2009. The 2008 season saw him guide the team to the BCS Championship and in 2009 he led the team to a 13-1 record. Tebow came in to the league in the 2010 NFL Draft and was selected by the Denver Broncos with his hard work and determination helping him to achieve great success on the field against all odds despite all the criticism thrown at him especially during his spell as the starting QB for the Bronco's which saw him pull off amazing feats over his 11 games as their starter and guiding them to the playoffs.

In that 2011 season the Denver Broncos were 1-4 when Tebow was announced as the team's starting quarterback for their next game against the Dolphins. They were down 15-0 before rallying back to win 18-15 in overtime making the Broncos the first NFL team in history to win a game after being down by at least 15 points with less than three minutes remaining to play in a match. The team were blown out 45-10 a week later against the Lions bringing them back down to earth and leaving them 2-5 with 10 games remaining. A week later Tebow threw two touchdown passes for 124 yards and rushed for 117 yards in a 38-24 win against divisional rivals the Oakland Raiders to get Denver back to winning ways. In week 10 of the season Tebow guided the Broncos to another win over a divisional rival despite only completing two out of his eight attempted passes in the game as the Broncos defeated the Chiefs taking the team to 4-5. His 56 yard game winning touchdown pass to Eric Decker was only his second pass completion of the day making Tebow just the fifth quarterback since 1980 to throw all of his team's passes, complete two or fewer and still win.

It's was those kind of games that give people the fuel to claim that Tebow isn't good enough to play as an NFL quarterback but on that day against the Chiefs he achieved his highest passer rating of 102.6 which he has only surpassed twice since that win. 2 wins in a row became 3 when Tim Tebow and the Broncos defeated the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football at home 17-13 which saw Tebow rush for a dramatic 20 yard rushing touchdown on a third down play with less than a minute remaining. The following weeks game went to overtime with Denver getting the win on the road against the Chargers 16-13; Tebow's 22 rushing attempts for 67 yards on that day were the most by an NFL quarterback since 1950 again putting a cloud over his ability to throw the ball. Regardless of these theories the Broncos were on a roll and the wins over the Jets and Chargers took Denver to 6-5 and to a winning record.

Their next game against the Vikings saw Tebow lead the team to their third consecutive comeback victory of the season. The game finished 35-32 and Tebow's performance was very impressive with the quarterback completing 10 of his 15 passing attempts for 202 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions thrown. He achieved the highest passer rating of his career to date, 149.3, which is very good considering the perfect passer rating is 158.3. The win saw the Broncos move on to 7-5 with 4 games remaining and the playoffs in site with the team winning 6 of its 7 games since Tebow took. A week later saw Tebow and the Broncos with their backs against the wall once again as the team trailed 10-0 with little over two minutes left in the game before tying it up 10-10 and going on to win the game 13-10 in overtime.

Since the NFL merger Tim Tebow became the only player to have over five game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime in his first 11 starts when he rallied the team from behind in the game against Chicago for his sixth game-winning drive. The win over Chicago was Denver's sixth straight victory but the team then fell to three straight defeats against the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs with Tebow throwing just one touchdown over those three games and four interceptions. His turnover rate wasn't bad and thankfully for the Broncos their 8-8 record was good enough to secure the team a spot in the playoffs as well as clinch their first AFC West divisional title since 2005 and only their second divisional title since 1998.

Tebow headed in to the wildcard round with all odds against him as the highly favoured Pittsburgh Steelers were predicted by many to walk over the Broncos and send them packing. Executive vice president and hall of fame quarterback John Elway said Tebow just had to "Pull the trigger" ahead of the first round playoff game in which Tebow played quite possibly the best game of his career as he threw for a career high 316 yards and two touchdowns which included the game-winning throw to Demaryius Thomas for a 80 yard score on the first play of overtime giving the Broncos the victory 29-23. Tebow set the Bronco's franchise record for a quarterback rating in a playoff game of 125.6 in the game and most notably gave Denver only their second playoff victory since John Elway retired in 1999 following back to back Super Bowl wins and their first playoff win since the 2006 victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. In the divisional round the Patriots proved to be too much for Tebow and the Broncos as they blew them out 45-10 but Tebow was on top of the world as he had set the NFL alight during the 2011 season.

From his critics to his success on the field it is impossible to sit on the fence when talking about Tim Tebow. Off the field though his devotion to Christianity is an inspiration to many and his autobiography Through My Eyes was the bestselling religious book of 2011. The book was also named the number as the number 1 sports book of 2011 and it spent 24 weeks on the New York Times best seller list by March 2012. Tebow has always devoted time to the young children of America with a edition of his book called Through My Eyes: A Quarterback Journey released for younger readers. Even more impressive is the fact that Tebow supports more than 40 national evangelists working in America and he has shared his Christian faith to youth groups, schools, prisons, churches as well as at press conferences and meetings. One thing’s for sure Tebow is a very humble young man and despite his rise to fame in 2012 he has remained very dignified. His popularity rose so high that "Tebowing" became a popular stance that football fans took pictures of each other doing; kneeling on one knee and resting your head on your first to take up a position of prayer. This started following the Broncos' comeback victory against the Dolphins, as mentioned previously, and was credited to a fan named Jared Kleinstein who posted a picture with himself and his friends on Facebook mimicking the pose. Various different interpretations of Tebowing were taken around the world and it was given its own website which gathered 20 million page views and around 20,000 different photos submitted to it. Tebow and Tebowing's popularity was confirmed when Tebowing was recognised as a word in the English language due to its high level of worldwide usage which is very similar to the word Obamamania used for current United States of America President Barack Obama. The pose was even featured in the popular video game Madden NFL 13.

Tebow like most sports stars has his critics but he also has a lot of people rooting for him to get another shot in the National Football League; Jacksonville Jaguar fans recently creating a petition and sending it to President Obama to convince him that the Jags needed Tebow but some other Jacksonville fans created a petition against signing Tebow today which kind of sums up his luck. Even during his time as a Denver Bronco John Elway himself said on Tebow "It doesn't matter how you win it, as long as you win it". I genuinely feel that Tim Tebow would have a chance to compete for the Bills, Browns, Cardinals, Eagles, Jaguars, Raiders, Titans and Vikings. Ironically the Jets are who he would have the best chance with considering how bad their quarterback situation is but because of them wasting a year of his career Tebow's NFL career may actually be over. Many people have suggested Tebow should switch position if he is to carry on playing in the league but considering how many All-Americans out of college don't make an NFL team why would Tebow suddenly establish himself in the league as say a running back or tight end.

Diving in to the world and life of Tim Tebow has been intriguing. With the amount he's achieved on such little time on the field he should at least earn a shot as a backup for a team.
